Respect of human rights and enhancement of the Palestinian penitentiary system: these are the themes discussed during the meeting occurred between the Consul General of Italy in Jerusalem Fabio Sokolowicz, the Director of AICS Jerusalem Cristina Natoli and the new Palestinian Minister of Justice Mohammad Shalaldeh.
The Italo-Palestinian partnership in the justice sector aimed at achieving over the years relevant goals, thanks to the project KARAMA (on-going) funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, namely the support to the Human Rights Unit (established in the framework of a previous Italian project) and a series of vocational trainings for Ministry’s officials on the monitoring in the Reform and Rehabilitation Centres, international reporting and the local right alignment to international standards.
The new Minister highlighted the importance of monitoring activities delivered by the Human Rights Unit to verify the international standards’ real implementation. The Minister himself took part to a visit to the Reform and Rehabilitation Centres in Betunia and he’s willing to participate also the upcoming visits, in order to personally follow the Human Rights Unit’s job.
The Minister finally confirmed the intention to prolong this collaboration with the Italian cooperation, to improve internal skills at the Ministry and disseminate a culture for the respect of human rights in Palestine, which are pillars of the 100 days programme of the Ministry.
Next step in September 2019 with the second mission of the Italian Guarantor of Detainees’ rights and of the Antigone Association, that during last March held a two days workshop much appreciated.
