New hope in Palestine for gender equality and human rights

Ramallah, May 16th 2019 – A new project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation is starting in Palestine and goes to enrich the on-going “Human rights and gender equality” Programme at AICS Jerusalem, which includes 9 initiatives for a total amount of around 17 million EURO.

The first Advisory Committee has been held today in Ramallah between the main stakeholders and in particular the General Consul of Italy in Jerusalem Fabio Sokolowicz, The Head of AICS Jerusalem Cristina Natoli, the Palestinian General Prosecutor Akram Alkhateb and the new Minister of Education Marwan Awartani.

AMAL – Hope, tile of the project, implements activities for the enhancement of female entrepreneurship and women’s participation to public life, in addition to the promotion of a culture aimed at gender equality and human rights among Palestinian institutions (schools, universities, Ministry of Education, Public Prosecution), with a special focus on violence prevention and non-discrimination.

In the last years, these topics became crucial in the Palestinian social agenda, in parallel with the upcoming need to reduce the exposure to contexts of violence due to the prolonging conflict and to provide the Ministry of Education with pedagogic tools for the set-up of a free of violence and prejudices environment in the Palestinian institutions. One the most expected results is the drafting of innovative methodologies to assimilate the respect of human rights and gender equality in the framework of the Palestinian educational system in schools, universities and civil society.

The total amount is 4 million euro, split in three main components: 1,210,000 EURO for budget support to Ministry of Education and Public Prosecution; 1.366,000 euro to be assigned through call for proposals to civil society organizations for women empowerment (LOT 1) and gender equality (LOT 2); a third component in direct management for technical assistance and capacity building.

The last portion by 150,000 euro, through the partnership between ISTAT and PCBS (Palestinian Bureau of Statistics) and technical assistance already on-going, aims at monitoring and disseminating SDGs in Palestine based on data collections provided by PCBS.
