Beit Jala, December 9th 2018 – The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Italian NGO Centro Elis, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Italian University Campus Bio-Medico in Rome and other partners launched today within an official ceremony the first breast cancer unit in Palestine, inaugurated in the framework of a development project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
For the very first time in Palestine now it is possible to have diagnosis and therapy for one of the most common cancers among women, with the best European standards. “Starting from today also in Palestine we can have all the diagnostic exams from the echography to the mammography and the biopsy for the breast cancer screening, we can have results in one week and in case of a neoplasm we can immediately intervene” stated the Director of the Unit Dr. Nafez Sarhan.
The Minister of Health Jawad Awwad, the General Consul of Italy to Jerusalem Fabio Sokolowicz, the Director of AICS Jerusalem Cristina Natoli and the Italian partners of the project attended the ceremony and payed a visit to the Unit, which is already operative and it hosted in the first two months more than 300 women. In one year, it will possible to treat 40% of the cases directly in Palestine without going abroad.
