Dheisheh Camp – The Steering Committee of the European Union–funded, AICS-implemented project “Green Dheisheh: Improvement of Solid Waste Management in Dheisheh Camp and the Surrounding Area” met recently in Dheisheh Camp to assess progress and outline next steps.
AICS and CESVI, the implementing partner, presented updates on the key work packages, which include the implementation of a new primary collection system for the refugee camp and its surrounding area, recommendations for improving the efficiency of solid waste transportation, an awareness campaign for the population and institutions involved and the initiation of a recycling cardboard initiative.
The latter is in line with other previous and ongoing projects funded by AICS in the same area.
In terms of equipment, each household of the camp will receive a personal waste bin, UNRWA will be equipped with two mini tippers for the primary collection and one compactor truck for the secondary collection. Moreover, the waste collection point (transfer station) of the camp has undergone significant upgrades.
The committee also discussed several operational and logistical challenges and identified potential solutions to be implemented.
This collaborative effort marks a meaningful stride toward better waste management and environmental stewardship in Dheisheh Camp and the surrounding area.
